Biography

Archana , a mechanical engineer by education, started learning dance at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan in New Delhi at the age of 5. She later joined Nrityalaya Aesthitics Soceity in Singapore under the tutelage of  her guru for 7 years (minimum period required to complete Bharatanatyam training) and became an ardent student of Natyakala Nidhi Srimati Santha Bhaskar. Her guru, graduate in dance and music, is a winner of numerous awards and titles, including Natyakala Nidhi, the Kala Ratna Award, the Kala Rani and the National Cultural Medallion(Singapore).

Archana has performed in many shows and dance productions choreographed by Srimati Santha in bharatanatyam, and has been encouraged to choreograph on her own on many occasions. Some of her major performances in Singapore include Shakuntala production, Vikramoorvasiyam, HPAC conference, Chaari, Sringar, Maargam, Bharat Culture, Telugu Samajam New Year celebrations and Changi Rama temple Kumbaabhishekam. During her tutelage under Srimati Santha, Archana was also the President of Indian Dance Group at the National University of Singapore and she led the group to many performances local and overseas, which included, a 11-day trip to Shizuoka, Japan, for the Japan Youth International Musicale in May 2003.

 

Whilst pursuing a focus in her career in Singapore for 3years, her passions for dance compelled her to return to NUS Indian Dance group. Her major dance focus being Bharatanatyam, Archana has also learnt Kathak under Shri Charan Girdhar Chand. She has also had the opportunity to learn Kuchipudi from the renowned Raja and Radha Reddy. Besides these 3 classical dances, Archana has also learnt  and performed Rajasthani Folk, Dandia, Garba, Bengali folk dance, Tiruvathira (Kerela folk dance), Odissi and Kathakali. Apart from dance, Archana has also learnt Yoga and Kalari Payatu, the ancient and oldest martial arts technique originating in India.

 

She arrived Durban (South Africa) in September 2007 and pursued the MBA program at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Westville. Alongside her studies, she had performed at various occasions including FNB Diwali @ the Beachfront, Diwali Dhamaka @ Elangeni Hotel, 40th Anniversary of Andhra Maha Sabha @ Yellowood Park, Indian Republic Day celebrations @ City Hall.

 

After her arrival in Bogota in December 2008, she had actively participated at the Asian Festival on 1st March 2009 held at Museo del Chico. Working in close collaboration with ProAsia Colombia coordinators, she organised the various participants to represent India and performed bharatanatyam. Recently she has performed at University of Sabana, Universidad Militario Nueva Granada, University of Los Andes and Universidad de Javeriana. she then started teaching to a very interested group of students and has organised 3 shows with classical dance and drama productions including the Gita Govindam, which is the story of love between Lord Krishna and Radha. Om and Laya were her other productions which she presented with her students presenting the different classical dance styles of India. Whilst she was invited By Anandita Basu of Fundacion Kalakendra,  to perform for Sanskriti show in University of Javeriana, documentary producer Roberto Restrepo was impressed by her performance and invited her to work for his documentary on River Ganga called "Jala", where she performed the Tandava of Shiva who holds River Ganga in his matted locks.

 

She is the daughter of Mr Ramalingam, the Consul General of India to Birmingham. After arriving in the United Kingdom, it was opportune for her to perform at the Krishna Janmashtami celebrations in ISKCON temple, Coventry apart from the performance at the Indian Consulate General In August and January last where she had trained the children from the Consulate for the Independence and Republic day celebrations. She was invited to perform at the MAC theatre for Sonia Sabri Company’s 10 years anniversary and has had the great opportunity to perform a repertoire at the Balaji Temple on the occasion of Dussehra occasion and celebration of Shirdi Sai Baba Day, Ugadi and Tyagaraja Festival. Archana was also invited to share the dance stage with Kuchipudi dancer Abhinandana and was invited to perform for her show Nrityanjali in Blackpool. On special request from Baroness Verma (Member of House of Lords, friends of her father), Archana performed for her event which was in honour of Indian Minister Amar Singh and Bollywood Actress Jaya Prada.  For the Ugadi festival celebrations by Telugu Association Scotland, Archana was invited to perform and share the stage with renowned Music Director R P Patnaik. 

 

After her marriage to her French husband, she arrived in Lyon in June 2013 and started her performances and workshops as well as classes within the dance community of Lyon. For 2013 Diwali celebrations cum 25th Anniversary of Tamil Cultural Association in Lyon (France), Archana choreographed a unique dance to a song written in Hindi, and danced in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi styles. She also performed for Pongal in January 2014 for the Tamil Association as well as for the Festival of Colours, Holi, for the Indian Association Lyonnaise. Her performance for the Chinese New Year was well appreciated by the Chinese Consul General and was even invited to perform for the Semaine Asiatique at the University of INSA where she performed a uniquely choreographed piece of Chinese ribbon dance and Indian Dandia folk.
